Shipwrecked Sailor started because I can't not make music. I don't have a band or play shows. I make music in my bedroom because it lives in me and has to get out and I want my wife and friends will like it.
Art is a weird, powerful force. Art existing means the world is a slightly better place. My music will never save the world, but it might make doing the dishes a little more tolerable. That's why I put this stuff out for free. Someone paid $8 for *i dreamed a knife like a song you can't whistle* (thank you!) and that's $8 more than I ever expected to make off of it. It's the same for *if not a river.* It's free.
But this is a dark time for the United States. Art is a force against that darkness. Art should be encouraged.
If you click the "pay what you want" button, every dollar and cent will go to Young Chicago Authors. Every dollar and cent.
YCA is an organization that has been a tangible force for art and good in Chicago. They've helped cultivate better artists than me. Chance the Rapper, for instance. That's only scratching the surface. YCA is wonderful. YCA does real actual good for Chicago's most vulnerable. They make the world a slightly better place with art. So if you like *if not a river* and have the means, consider clicking that "pay what you want button." Maybe we can help good people make art and make good.
